Big Data presents several potential ethical and social challenges

iLEAD: Reasons for Learning Data Science in 2020

As I learned in class big data is extremely large sets of data, that cant be dealt with by traditional data processing software. The use of big data can present many social and ethical challenges.

Privacy concerns: Collecting major amounts of data about customers can prove possibly dangerous as if the company collecting the data is hacked or has a data leak, personal information about customers can be leaked to the internet or in to the wrong hands. There can also be a misuse of this information when it is collected

Moral concerns: Most people who are using websites don't realise that when they are browsing the internet, they have no idea that they are being categorised based on their actions on the website.

Data profiling: This can lead to dangerous and morally wrong habits e.g it is possible to gain access to lists of rape victims, people with specific illnesses and domestic violence shelters. This information could then be sold to interested parties or business for use, this is morally wrong.

Discrimination: According to a study conducted by google men and women see different ads for jobs online and according to this study men are often shown higher paid jobs than women! In 2023 this level of discrimination is not acceptable but according to this study that as a result of big data this is happening.

Social manipulation: The more that companies know about you the bigger the impacts that they can have on your life choices. Companies who use big data are looking for these 'golden nuggets' of information. These are specific information about what customers like whether it be Netflix and what film categories or Facebook and social aspects. Facebook for example can show you advertisements based on what they think your interests are and these are the ads that can show up on your feed, which can influence impulse purchases. On an extreme level big data can be used to spread propaganda or misinformation.
